There are many different styles of commodity trading, and I've tried most of them in my twenty-eight years in this business. I've found that keeping the trading process as simple as possible is by far the best way to go. 

The simple approach that I use is following the long-term trend of a commodity, enter a trade with either or both futures contracts and options at opportune times when chart patterns develop, and take profits when the trend changes. I'm primarily a long-term trader looking for trends that last for a month to a year or more. It's so much easier to enter and exit a trending market rather than trying to day trade where you have to be in and out in the same day, or swing trading where you're in and out in one or several days. I've found that these styles present the hardest work for the potential gains.

By catching these early developing trends, you can make thousands and even hundreds of thousands by adding additional contracts or options on price pullbacks as long as the trend remains intact. Catching long-term developing trends is how fortunes are made in this business.
