To make big money trading commodities you must get in early on the big price moves. The problem for the small account trader who only trades futures contracts is the large amount of margin required by the commodity exchanges in some markets to trade a single futures contract. For example, to trade a single futures contract in the wheat market requires that the trader to have a combined margin deposit of $5,875.00 in his/her account. So, many of the markets where big price moves occur are simply out of reach for the small account trader who chooses to trade futures contracts only.

 Trading chart patterns is nothing new, in fact, these patterns have been forming and being traded for over 100 years! Each of the thirty-two chart patterns that I'll show you how to trade have been tracked over the years and the success rate is based on a percentage basis from 70% to 100%! Can you imagine finding a chart pattern that has a 100% success rate of making you money! It does exist and is found at least several times each year, and I'll show it to you below. No software or black box trading system can offer that type success rate; it just doesn't exist!

You can spend thousands for trading systems before you ever make a cent in the markets. But why do that when you can trust a 100 year time tested trading method that requires nothing more than a few simple rules that I'll show you, free charts, red pencil and a ruler! Yes, it's that simple and I'll show you how on this page!

My style of trading is to use as few technical trading signals as possible to not complicate trading. One of the biggest mistakes new and not yet successful traders make is over analyzing a trade.

Learning to trade can be as easy or as difficult as you make it. You can choose the easy way which is simply trading what you see on the charts and not what you think or hear. Or, you can try to learn everything there is to know about the markets and trading, and I can assure you that you'll find enough information to keep you very busy for a very long time. It is not necessary and I can have you making money within a month and maybe less! There's just not that much to learn!

Don't get caught up in the 'information overload' of trying to learn all there is before you begin trading. All you need to know now is how to make money with the smallest risk in the shortest amount of time possible! 

You need a trading plan that is mechanical requiring very little input from you. A plan that has been proven to work over years of back testing and real-time trading. One that lets you know how much your risk is and how much money you can make or lose and the exact price to enter and exit with profits BEFORE you ever enter the trade!

That is how I trade and teach. I'll show you those charts now to explain.

The Narrow Sideways Chart Pattern. Hands down, the most powerful chart pattern in all trading!

We were following the sideways pattern in coffee and prices broke out of the channel in June.

I have never seen a sideways channel of four months or longer fail to lead to an explosive breakout at some point! And the coffee channel was no different than any other.

Option premiums become very well priced because no one is interested in buying them with prices stuck within the channel. But when prices break out, and they will, option premiums explode in value!

We purchase call options just when prices break free of the sideways channel at $1200 each. We did that in June 2010 and we used the December 2010 contract giving us over five-months until option expiration!

Those same call options are worth well over $13,000 each! And yes, chart pattern trading got us in early while the rest were still scratching their heads. Nothing complicated about it and there was a 100% chance of you making money!

You can spot narrow sideways channels in at least two or three markets each year!

Three Bar Trend Line:  Could you make money if you could connect just three daily price bar highs or lows with a line and extend that line out into the future which will tell you where a price of a commodity or stock be months in advance? You sure can and with stunning accuracy!

Many just can't grasp the power of the simple three bar trend line concept until they see it in action for themselves. Just take a look at the following examples:

Notice in August 2011 where we connected three daily price bar highs with a trend line and projected that line into February 2012. The trend was certainly down so you sell a futures contract or purchase a PUT option expecting prices to fall. Now look at the small triangle that formed in January. The slope of the upper line of the triangle was exactly where our three bar trend line was projected out to months ago! I'll show you more about triangles in a moment, but you simply place a buy and a sell order at the point of the triangle (669.25) and which ever order is filled you cancel the other. You would have profited $2000 in one day!

Is this example just a coincidence?...Not hardly!

Same thing happened in July soybeans!

Same thing in July coffee. I show you many more examples of how powerful yet simple this trend line is in the course and twice each week in the trade alerts. The reason why it's so powerful and profitable is because with this simple trend line you know whether to be a buyer or a seller. There is no guess work!

Triangles:  Triangle chart patterns are another of my favorite to trade because the are found more often than any other pattern. You find them at market tops, bottoms and within a trend. Another great benefit is they have predetermined profit objectives. Yes, even before you place your trade you know how much money you'll make! No joke, take a look at this one!

This is a descending triangle in March 2010 Silver. It's very easy to print out one of our free charts from the Ultimate Traders' Resource private website and take a red pencil, a ruler and draw the base line and sloping line, then measure the triangle to come up with a $13,230.00 profit objective. Once prices breakout of the channel you can project that amount higher and take profits when prices reach that amount. Or, I'll show you how to use the trailing stop method to possibly make even more from this trade.

I don't have room to show all triangle trades here, but we have also profited a little over $80,000 in late 2009 and 2010 in the gold market alone!

Another favorite chart pattern is the Head & Shoulders Top pattern. It has an 85% chance of reaching the first profit objective!

The market makes a top then prices drop back leaving the right shoulder, then prices moves higher again making new highs and making the head. Prices drop again then back up leaving the neckline, prices once again move higher but fall short of the highs of the head then reverse again leaving the right shoulder. Once the formation is complete, you sell a futures contract or purchase a put option when prices trade below the neckline.

Once the formation makes the neckline we measure the distance from the neckline to the high price of the head which gives us a predetermined first profit objective. Then we have the opportunity to use the predetermined profit stop or trail a stop to maximize the trade.

This is pretty difficult stuff isn't it. When my grand children get bored, which is often, I give them printed charts and pictures of the chart patterns and ask them to see how many chart patterns they can find...It's a "connect the dots" game for them and they love it. They have no idea yet that you can make a very nice living from doing this!

Head and shoulders tops form in all markets but I showed you the e-mini S&P because all traders can trade this market. More importantly, and you can check me out with historical charts, you'll find this formation EVERY year in late spring or early summer in the stock index markets! In fact, if you look at the 1929 and 2008 DOW chart you'll see the head & shoulders top just before the stock market crashed!

A Declining Wedge Triangle Pattern

The declining wedge triangle pattern is another favorite that is found often. This one in December gold is one of three triangles we found in gold this year for a total profit of $56,000.00 from just this one market! We recommended trading these gold triangles with futures contracts for the larger size trading accounts, and option spreads for smaller account sizes of $2,000 and up. Our trade alerts have something for every trader regardless of your trading account size.

We also recommend a great brokerage firm that does not require an account size minimum and commissions are .59 cents per trade. 

There are 32 known chart patterns, but only eight of those are found most often. I show you how to trade these in my course using both futures and option trading strategies...there's nothing complicated about it! Here is a current (02/28/12) wedge triangle in gold that we are currently trading. These patterns occur year after year!

A 1-2-3 bottom chart formation in December wheat

I could go on and on showing you numerous chart pattern trades for this year, but I do want to show you a bottom chart formation.

December wheat had been a downtrend since June 2009 (not shown on the chart) but a 1-2-3 bottom formation developed. This formation started with a new #1 low then prices climbed, then reversed leaving the #2 point. Prices then retraced again but did not trade below the #1 point. Prices climbed again leaving behind the #3 point.

The trade rules for trading the 1-2-3 bottom is to buy a futures contract or call option "if" prices rise above the #2 point. However, this market was in a long term down trend so a safer entry is to place your buy order just above the down trend line because this tells us that the trend is changing from down to up.

Keep in mind that at this point we heard of the drought in Russia and the Black Sea region where about one third of the world wheat is grown. The market then traded much higher leaving a blow off top bar where prices open for the day near the previous day's opening price, then trades much higher, then closes at the lows for the day. This is a classic reversal bar and suggests, at minimum, a temporary top. 

We were cautiously moving our profit stop up in wheat because we had no idea how far prices were going to go and our goal is to maximize the profits for the trade.

Then we were able to draw the 50% retracement level and we moved our stops up to just below the 50% line. We did this because if prices trade below that line they tend to move on in that direction and we want out of long positions. 

We were stopped out with a $6,500.00 profit for this trade when prices traded below the 50% level and triggered our profit stop.

The main point I wish you to see is the fact that we were in this market early before the news of the drought by using chart patterns to signal our entry points and, more importantly, when to exit the trade with a profit. All done by trading what we see rather than what we thought or heard from others!
